Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Turkey

Happy World Environment Day

04.06.2021 / Ankara

On June 5th, World Environment Day, M. Rifat Hisarcıklıoğlu, President of the Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Turkey (TOBB), issued a celebratory message. Pointing out that not being sensitive about the environment can have devastating effects on the economic and social dimension, Hisarcıklıoğlu said, “Carbon-based and polluting economic growth models are no longer sustainable, it is necessary to be ready for the green transformation.”

Hisarcıklıoğlu stated in his message:

“We are at a time when we are feeling the effects of climate change very intensely and the environment is showing us very clearly the vital importance of the environment. The process we are experiencing, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic, prove to us once again that there is a necessity rather than a choice to protect the environment.

Extreme weather events, extreme temperature rise, drought, rising water level have devastating effects on environmental, economic and social dimensions.

This year's theme, which is recognized by the United Nations as June 5th and designated as the ‘ecosystem restoration’ of the annual World Environment Day, sends a very meaningful message to reverse this negative trend.

Carbon-based and polluting economic growth models are no longer sustainable, we must be ready for the green transformation.

The European Green Agreement, which is of great importance for our country and our future, is an important turning point in shaping many factors from industry to trade, from economic cycle to environmentally friendly energy, and has important opportunities for environmentally oriented production.

In order to wake up to more livable tomorrows, we must do our part, transform our industry and make environmentally friendly breakthroughs. At its very core, we must change our way of life, choose the way to evaluate waste, put recycling and recovery at the center of our lives. We must adopt a sustainable model of production and consumption. We should support environmentally friendly investments in mobility and establish a transportation system that contributes to the protection of nature and the environment through the use of electric vehicles.

As the Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Turkey, we continue to work to increase the awareness of our industrialists on issues such as recycling, zero waste, emission reduction, carbon footprint with the awareness of the importance of the environmental and climate crisis and we encourage environmentally friendly activities.

With these thoughts and in the hope of raising awareness about the importance of the environment, I wish all our people the best of wishes on World Environment Day.”
