‘Evaluation of Wooden Structures in Post-Earthquake Construction’ meeting in İstanbul

The meeting on ‘Evaluation of Wooden Structures in Post-Earthquake Construction’ was held by TOBB Forest Products Council on March 20 at the TOBB İstanbul Service Building.​

The meeting was attended by officials from the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, the Ministry of National Education, the Ministry of Industry and Technology, the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, the General Directorate of Forestry and the Real Estate Housing Administration, as well as around 80 representatives from international institutions and organizations such as architects, civil engineers, academics, sectoral non-governmental organizations and UNDP.

In the meeting organized in order to prevent the loss of life and property after earthquakes in the coming years and to contribute to the urgent meeting of the need for permanent shelter and housing and to activate the dynamics of the forestry sector for this purpose, the characteristics of wooden structures and earthquake-resistant wooden structures in contemporary architecture and the advantages of the use of wooden products in construction in terms of seismicity and wooden structure manufacturing, installation techniques and structural wood standards  Presentations were made on the subject.

In the negotiations held after the presentations, taking into account the architectural, static and technical properties of wood, which is an environmentally friendly and sustainable material in terms of human health and quality of life, and the advantages of being an environmentally friendly and sustainable material, architectural projects were produced for the buildings of the General Directorate of Forestry damaged in the earthquake and the buildings needed by other regional directorates deemed appropriate and technical specification solutions were carried out. The public will was put forward for reconstruction with wooden structures. In order to diversify the building stock in Türkiye, especially in the earthquake region, multidimensional analyses and determinations were made on the issues related to the construction of earthquake-resistant wooden buildings and facilities, and application examples and renderings of wooden buildings, schools, hotels and dwellings in Türkiye and abroad were shared with the participants.

In the evaluation in the last part of the meeting, it was emphasized that the road map and process will be closely followed by all stakeholders in order to complete the necessary administrative and technical processes in order to build and spread the appropriate wooden structures in all regions of Türkiye, especially in the earthquake region, and to start the implementation as soon as possible.
