The “IZSU Container HEPP Project”, developed in cooperation with TOBB ETU Water Turbine Design and Test Center (HİDRO), TUBITAK Marmara Research Center (MAM) and Izmir Water and Sewerage Administration General Directorate (IZSU), was presented at TOBB ETU Campus.
In his speech at the launch ceremony, Sarınay said that they cooperate with public and private sector organizations in many areas, especially in R&D activities, and that a significant part of these collaborations are carried out at TOBB ETU Technology Center.
Rector Sarınay explained that HİDRO, which was established in 2013, offers a wide range of services from the design and production of water turbines to quality control processes and model turbine tests at international standards.
Pointing out that the center sets an example in university-industry cooperation by combining theoretical knowledge with experimental and practical applications, Sarınay said, “The center consists of three main components: Computer Aided Design Laboratory, Turbine Manufacturing Laboratory and Water Turbine Model Test Unit. The model test rig is the test rig with the largest installed power in the world with an installed power of 2.5 megawatts.”
Sarınay stated that a renovation project has been initiated for the Sarıyar Dam and HEPP in Ankara-Nallıhan, and that the rehabilitation of the power plant with an installed capacity of 160 megawatts is being carried out by the Center and TÜBİTAK MAM, and that the first unit is planned to be commissioned in 2025.
Sarınay stated that the project introduced is the result of R&D efforts.
Pointing out that a system developed with domestic design and production is being implemented with the project in question, Sarınay said:
“This container-type micro HEPP, which can be easily assembled and disassembled and works unmanned, opens the door to the energy needs and green transformation goals of municipalities with its low installation and operating costs. With this project, we are happy to provide solutions to the energy needs of our municipalities and contribute to their green transformation goals. With the vision, strong infrastructure and know-how of our university, it will always be one of our most important goals to develop and implement technologies in the field of renewable energy in line with Türkiye's green transformation goals.”
- “The product will be shipped to the field in the coming weeks”
TOBB ETU HİDRO Director Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kutay Çelebioğlu said that the mission of the Center is to train qualified people by increasing knowledge in the field of hydro energy, to create thematic research and development infrastructure and to ensure the effective and efficient use of renewable hydro energy resources.
Çelebioğlu emphasized that the project is a special turbine system consisting of modular parts placed in a container, designed so that the site location can be selected, and said, “All systems of the power plant, which can operate unmanned, work autonomously. The product will be shipped to the field within the next two weeks.”
