First Stakeholder Workshop of the Project on Harmonization with the EU's New Battery Legislation and Establishment of a Management System for Electric Vehicle Batteries

Within the framework of the Protocol signed between the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change and the Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Türkiye (TOBB); the 1st Stakeholder Workshop of the Project on Compliance with the EU's New Battery Legislation and Establishing a Management System for Electric Vehicle Batteries was held at TOBB with the participation of public institutions and private sector.​

In their opening speeches, Cengiz Delibaş, Deputy Secretary General of TOBB, and Gürsel Erul, Deputy Director General of Environmental Management of the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, drew attention to the circular economy and green transformation issues, stating that batteries are an important energy source and one of the key elements on the path to sustainable development, green transportation, clean energy and 2053 Net zero emissions, and pointed out the need for cooperation between public institutions and the private sector.

After the opening speeches, presentations made by the project team informed the participants about the obligations of all relevant stakeholders in line with the EU Battery and Waste Battery Regulation.

The agenda items for the workshop were discussed in the first session were identifying specific gaps and challenges between EU and Turkish regulations and national constraints in the management of batteries and waste batteries in Türkiye. The second session saw discussion on developing feasible recommendations for regulatory harmonization and the establishment of an EV battery management system in Türkiye. The third session focused on prioritizing recommendations and establishing a clear roadmap for regulatory harmonization and implementation.

At the end of the sessions with intense discussions, the 1st Stakeholder Workshop ended after the opinions and suggestions of 11 workgroups were received.
