Waste and Recycling Industry Council discuss current state of the sector

The Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Türkiye (TOBB) Waste and Recycling Industry Council meeting was held under the chairmanship of Council President Ali Kantur, with the participation of TOBB Board Member Zeki Kıvanç and TOBB Deputy Secretary General Cengiz Delibaş.​

The meeting was attended by Nurullah Öztürk, President of the Turkish Environment Agency; Hakkı Karabörklü, Director General of Product Safety and Inspection at the Ministry of Trade; Fatih Turan, Director General of Environmental Management at the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change; and Barış Ecevit Akgün, Deputy Director General of Environmental Impact Assessment, Permits and Inspection at the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change. Delivering the opening speech, TOBB Board Member Zeki Kıvanç emphasized that the recycling sector should be considered not only as an environmental issue but also as an important component of economic transformation, competitiveness, and industrial policies. Stating that the strategic importance of the sector is increasing day by day in line with global regulations, increasing waste amounts, and resource efficiency targets, Kıvanç noted that strengthening public-private sector cooperation is of critical importance.

During the remainder of the meeting, Members of Parliament delivered comprehensive presentations on specific sub-sectors. The current situation, problems encountered, and proposed solutions for the packaging, glass, plastic, paper-cardboard, waste electrical and electronic equipment, vegetable waste oil, mineral oil, batteries, end-of-life vehicles, waste-derived fuel, end-of-life tires, household, medical, and other sub-sectors were shared with public representatives. The presentations addressed regulatory practices, inspection processes, capacity utilization, compliance with international regulations, and areas of sectoral development. 

Public representatives attending the meeting shared their views on the topics on the sector’s agenda and the work being carried out.

The meeting also included an exchange of views on steps that could contribute to the sector's development by evaluating possible inter-institutional collaborations. It was emphasized that the Assembly would continue to strengthen the public-private sector dialogue and contribute to the sustainable development of the sector.

The meeting concluded after the participants’ views and suggestions were noted.
