EUROPEAN WOMEN’S FORUM, HELD IN TRABZON

27.11.2014 /

A group of 110 women from 18 different cities of Turkey, including academics, and journalists participated in the European Women's Forum 2014 held in Trabzon on 12-14 November. The Deputy Head of the Political Affairs, Press and Information Section, Ms Andreea Schmidt, represented the EU Delegation to Turkey.

Women’s rights and gender equality are crucial to EU-Turkey cooperation. The EU considers that only active gender policies and mainstreaming in all areas can lead to real gender equality, its Member States exercising a rights-based approach in their actions. Participants of the event discussed EU policies in this field, the concept of zero tolerance for abuses, and the space for women in decision-making, employment and education in Turkey.

At the forum moderated by Kaan Yakuphan artists, representatives of various professions and socio-economic backgrounds were set to look at the theme of “Equality, Rights and Freedom” and to deliberate on the results of a questionnaire to be filled in through electronic voting. Questions to reflect upon include women's contribution to equality and freedom, gender roles, and whether gender quotas are necessary in employment or politics.
