In his opening speech, TOBB Board Vice President Ali Kopuz stated that, as the long standing nations of this region, Turk and Arab countries need to act together with the tenet of ‘grace and prosperity in unity; anguish in dissent’.

Stressing the need to strengthen the private sector, Kopuz stated that success is possible through the private sector.

Kopuz reported that the Turkish economy has been growing steadily for the last 6 years, pointing out that Turkey was Europe’s fastest growing country in 2015, drawing in 17 billion USD in direct foreign investments last year.

“Public administration budget deficit is around 1%,” said Kopuz, stating that their global commerce performance is seen positively. Kopuz reported that the effects of the global economy and problems with Russia are slowly improving.

- “Our current trade volume is but a drop in the ocean”

Stating that Turkey conducts only 8% of its trade with the Arab League, Kopuz said, “The Arab League conducts only 1% of its trade with Turkey. We are not doing business with each other. With regards to potential, our current trade volume is but a drop in the ocean. I can see the energy necessary inside you. We must increase trade among Islamic countries. Western countries which were enemies for centuries have become rich by trading with each other. Countries which were already rich are coming together to become even richer.”

- Visas must be lifted

Kopuz touched on the importance of signing a free trade agreement and lifting visas in order to increase trade between Turkey and Arab countries, stating that people would conduct trade at the most convenient place.

Stressing the need to form a common legislative system as a foundation for increasing cooperation to the necessary levels, Kopuz stated that there must be no limitations to the movement of goods – a matter as important as the free movement of people.
