Undersecretary of the Swedish Embassy Peter Svensson Kemeny said in his speech that World Refugees Day is being addressed by the European Union in Turkey in this manner, “Ramadan is a time in which love and philanthropy should shine through; it is a time to remember each other, to be thankful and generous.”

Stressing the fact that people having to leave their countries behind and become refugees is truly sad and difficult, Kemeny stated that similar things also happen in the EU with his family having to leave their countries three time in the last 70 years.

Kemeny stated that there are now more refugees in the world than ever before, reaching 65 million.

Drawing attention to the fact that Turkey is hosting the largest number of refugees in the world, Kemeny said, “Due to the war in Syria, Turkey has become the host of the largest number of refugees in the world. The support of the local population for the 2.7 million refugees in Turkey is astonishing. The EU is the largest donator to the Syrian refugee crisis with 5 billion Euros.”
