“Faik Yavuz attended World Food Day event”

TOBB Board Accountant Member Üyesi Faik Yavuz attended “World Food Day” event organised at Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock with the support of United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the Union of Turkish Agricultural Chambers (TZOB).​

In his speech he delivered at the event Minister of Food, Agriculture and Livestock Ahmet Eşref Fakıbaba, stating that waste being an important issue for the world, also said "Allah Willing if we produce more healthier food and prevent waste I believe we shall reduce starvation origin deaths."

During his speech Fakıbaba said that this year’s theme of World Food Day is “Change the future of migration, invest in food safety and rural development”.  

Reminding that Turkey hosting about 3.5 million refugees, Fakıbaba said "According to the figures by United Nations 66 million people faced with forced displacement. 26 percent of those are being put up within the region where our country is also located. Refugees are mostly the citizen of tree countries as Syria, Afghanistan and South Sudan. Turkey, from the first day by the directive of our President Esteemed Sayın Recep Tayyip Erdoğan carried out ‘open door policy’ for the victims of Syria crisis without engaging with religious, linguistic and racial discrimination."

- Number of hungry people increased

FAO representative to Turkey and Central Asia Sub-regional Coordinator Yuriko Shoji, stating that according to the report by FAO the number of hungry people has increased by 38 million 2015, reported that the main reason for that is the ongoing worldwide conflicts, drought and floods.

Pointing out 40 percent increase in number of immigrants in 2015 comparing to 2000s, Shoji said "We know that most of the international immigrants are from rural areas. 75 percent of the people living in rural areas are poor and unprovided with food security, earning their livings from agriculture and natural resources."

TZOB President Şemsi Bayraktar, stating that hunger could be removed by balanced distribution and minimised waste level, also said "Worldwide there are 815 million hungry and undernourished people but we should keep in mind that there are also 682 million obese people."

Following the opening speeches, persons and establishments conducting successful works and operating within the frame of theme as determined within World Food Day presented with their rewards.
