The meeting is held in cooperation of Economic Development Foundation (IKV) and Turkey Europe Association (TAV) on 22 April 2011 in Istanbul. With the participation of more than 100 civil society organizations and university representatives, “Civil Society Platform for Turkey’s EU Membership Process" is formed. Platform agreed on a joint declaration at the end of the meeting.
Civil society platform composed a Joint Declaration regarding the Turkey EU membership process. Joint declaration which is sound by President of TOBB Mr. M. Rifat Hisarcıklıoğlu mainly points out that; “Turkey’s EU membership process is not proceeding any more. Government and all political parties should attempt to improve relations. EU countries and EU institutions should consider their previous assurances and show concern on the issue in this matter.”
Some of the important issues pointed in the Declaration is as below;
- “We came together in order to attract attention of our government, political parties, EU countries and its institutions as well as EU public to our worry on the current condition.”
- “Current environment shows that the issue is far from being prior in the agenda of both sides. EU membership is indispensable for Turkey. EU membership means sustainable development, high democratic standards, safety for rule of law, individual freedoms and equality within the society. Political and economic incidents nor in EU neither in Tukey can change this fact.”
- “ We need to mind that EU orientation is our own issue at the first sight. We hope the coming elections will be a new starting point to this aim with an understanding of over political party matters and pass rapidly the necessary reforms.”
- “Although chief negotiators strong efforts on the visa problem, the issue keeps to be the main problem of civil society dialogue.”
