The Fourth United Nations Least Developed Countries (LDCs) Conference will be held in Istanbul between the 9th and the 13th of May 2011. In the private sector track of the conference, three main activities will take place.
The Conference held once every ten years is expected to be attended by heads of state and government, ministers, parliament members, private sector representatives, academicians and NGO representatives numbering around 10,000 from 192 member countries of the United Nations. The Conference represents an important occasion for Turkey to improve its economic and financial relations with the participating countries and Turkey’s international esteem.
The Conference is made up of five tracks. These are; Intergovernmental, Interparliamental, Civil Society, Private Sector and Academical-Intellectual Tracks.
The Private Sector Track will host 3 main events. These are; High-Level Meeting on Investment and Partnerships, Global Partnership Business Forum and Trade Fair Forum.
The Inaugural Ceremony will take place on May 9, 2011 with the attendance of Abdullah Gül, the President of The Republic of Turkey. TOBB President M. Rifat Hisarcıklıoğlu will attend the Inaugural Ceremony along with heads of state, ministers and UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon.
- High-Level Meeting on Investment and Partnerships
High-Level Meeting on Investment and Partnerships on May 9, 2011 will convene to discuss important matters affecting the development of private sectors in LDCs, bringing together CEO’s, heads of state, ministers and delegation presidents from LDCs and other countries. High-Level Meeting on Investment and Partnerships encourages governmental and private sector leaders to develop strategies for development and form partnerships with LDCs.
President of the 65th session of the United Nations General Assembly H.E. Mr. Joseph Deiss and UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon will attend the meeting. In the meeting presided by Turkey Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, TOBB/DEİK President and Eurochambers Vice-President M. Rifat Hisarcıklıoğlu will be giving a speech.
TOBB Board of Directors and high-level businessmen as well as TOBB President M. Rifat Hisarcıklıoğlu will attend the meeting wherein Heads of State, high-level private sector representatives and other participants will come together to hold a round-table discussion on good governance, peace and stability, production capacity and entrepreneurship, access to finances and markets, climate change, infrastructure themes and one of the sectors of agriculture, tourism, telecommunication, energy services, mining in relations to abolishing obstacles in the way of LDCs’ investment and competitive abilities.
After the meeting, an announcement containing suggestions of CEOs on how to ensure the development of private sectors in LDCs in conjunction with the reports prepared during the discussion will be made on Tuesday, May 10, 2011 in a press conference.
-Global Partnership Business Forum
The Business Forum will be host to more than thirty events aimed at developing partnerships and the private sector in LDCs between the 9th and the 13th of May 2011. This forum will focus on good governance principles, maintaining peace and stability, increasing production capacity, entrepreneurship, the financial sector, access to markets, climate change and infrastructure.
Several panels will be held on Tuesday, May 10, 2011 by TOBB as part of the Private Sector Activities. These are; “The ideal institutional structure enabling LDCs to become motivated and maintain private sector growth,” (13:00PM), “Supporting Millennium Development Goals (MDG): The role of chambers in MDG realization,” (15:30PM). And on May 12, 2011 at 15:30PM, “Supporting the institutionalization of the private sector in LDCs: Turkey’s best implementations.”
The goal of these panels is to convey the experiences of TOBB and Turkey to LDCs.
