“We must all protect the freedom of press”

In his message celebrating the abolishment of censorship in Turkish press and the “July 24th Journalists and Press Day”, TOBB President M. Rifat Hisarcıklıoğlu pointed out the importance of the people’s freedom to information and news. Hisarcıklıoğlu said, “Freedom of press for societies is essential as food and water are indispensable for people.”
Asking that everyone protect the freedom of press and work ethics, Hisarcıklıoğlu went on, “The Turkish Media and Communication Council has been founded as a cooperation platform under TOBB to bring together the prominent director and journalists of our press to develop the sector and protect liberties. As The Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Turkey, we heartily believe that an independent and objective press plays an important role in both our economic and social development.”
In his speech Hisarcıklıoğlu said:
“Our press has an important function in that it informs our society, relates developments and ideas.
As the Veteran Mustafa Kemal Atatürk said, the press is the voice of the nation. It is the shared belief of everyone today that development cannot be made under oppression and restriction, censorship will not lead to a happy and secure future.
Therefore, we must all protect our liberties just as we protect our bread and water.
It is with these thoughts that I celebrate the July 24th Journalists and Press Day of all our press contributors on behalf of the Turkish business world.”
