21.09.2020 /

The Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Turkey (TOBB) Turkey Natural Gas Council meeting was held under the chairmanship of TOBB Executive Vice President Selçuk Öztürk and Council President İbrahim Akbal. The main agenda of the meeting, which was held with the intense interest of the private sector and the public, was the discovery of natural gas in Sakarya.

Ahmet Öztürk, Deputy Chief of TPAO Strategy Department, gave information about the search efforts in the Black Sea and Mediterranean. Comparing the amount of gas exploration in Sakarya field with similar sites, Öztürk stated that gas can meet one-third of our country's consumption in “Peak Plateau” production and is planned to be available in 2023 with an entry point around Zonguldak.

Turkish Natural Gas Council Vice President Yaşar Arslan stated that Russia's share of imports fell in the first half of 2020, but Azerbaijan and LNG imports came to the fore. During the pandemic, consumption decreased by 4% compared to the previous year; the decline is mainly due to natural gas power generation plants, he noted. Yaşar Arslan announced that HES code application will be launched in internal plumbing control processes and consumer centers in order to prevent the spread of the pandemic. Arslan also reported that the R&D project GAZBİR, which aims to mix 5% hydrogen into natural gas in the first stage, has been successfully concluded.

BOTAŞ Natural Gas Operations and Market Operations Regional Manager Murat Önde, who gave information about the 2020 Summer Term Assessments and Winter Period Preparations, stated that at the beginning of 2020, the land part pipeline of Turkish Stream was commissioned and the gas flow from Kıyıköy started, and also in March TANAP main measurement station tests were completed.  Reporting that, approximately 16,000 km pipeline is serving 81 provinces’ natural gas needs, Önde provided information regarding natural gas supply and delivery quantities and pipeline maintenance-repair effort.

MEDREG Deputy Secretary General Hasan Özkoç, stating that the world faced a major event every decade, such as the world economic crisis of 2008, the Fukushima nuclear power plant accident, rock gas exploration and now the pandemic, and that these developments have severely affected the markets, gave a presentation in which he evaluated the Global LNG/Natural Gas Markets after the pandemic. In the presentation, Özkoç examined the course of world natural gas and LNG production and consumption between regions and countries and stated that the falling price of natural gas and LNG could be considered an opportunity by Asia Pacific and China.
