The Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Turkey (TOBB) and Foreign Economic Relations Council held a dinner in honor of the USA Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano at the Çırağan Palace in İstanbul. Speaking at the dinner, TOBB Board of Directors Vice President Halim Mete said, “As TOBB, we have undertaken a project in order to increase regional trade and speed up border crossings as well as facilitating and making them safer. We have taken on the duty of the modernization of our customs gates with our neighbors on a build-operate-transfer model. We have established the Customs and Commerce Inc. to this end.” Mete also touched on the increasing terrorist activities in Turkey, saying, “Instability is the greatest enemy of the economy.”

Following Halim Mete’s speech, the US Secretary of Homeland Security Napolitano said, “I’ve had the opportunity to see with my own eyes what is happening here. There is an incredible performance present. Our two countries should work together. There is a deep rooted history of relations between the two countries. Trade between the two countries is growing rapidly. We are developing our relations with cultural and educational exchange programs.

We are well aware of the issues afflicting this region. Homeland Security was established following 9/11. Our goal is to defend the USA against terrorism. In the 10 years since, our duties have grown to include others duties as well. Securing USA borders, preventing illegal immigration, upholding the rule of law, protecting civilians and helping citizens during natural disasters. We have employees in 75 countries. We are working together with international partners.”

Attending the dinner in honor of Secretary Napolitano were Ambassador Francis J. Ricciardone as well as many members of the business community.
