Mahmut Özgener was born in 1963 in Izmir. He graduated primary school from Gazi Primary School, secondary school from Izmir Saint Joseph and high school from İzmir Atatürk High School and then Dokuz Eylül University Marketing Department.
He has been working in the tobacco industry since 1987. He is also active in the automotive sector with Vosmer Automotive Company.
Between 1999 and 2018, he served as the Chairman of the Board of Aegean Tobacco Exporters Union. Between 2001-2003 and 2006-2008, he was Deputy Chairman of the Board of the Chairmen of Aegean Exporters Unions for two terms and Deputy Chairman of Turkey Exporters Assembly between 2006-2008. He has been serving as the Deputy Chairman of the Aegean Tobacco Exporters Union since 25 April 2018.
Mahmut Özgener began his career as sports manager in the Altay infrastructure at the start of the 1980s. In 1994, he was chairman of the Altay Sports Club as well as three additional terms.
Elected to Turkey Football Federation Board of Directors between 2004-2006, Özgener was appointed to presidency by proxy as a result of TFF President Hasan Doğan losing his life to a heart attack. By winning the elections held in August, he continued his Football Federation Presidency in 2011.
Özgener served as the Chairman of the Executive Board for İzmir EXPO 2020 Candidacy.
Özgener has been the President of Izmir Chamber of Commerce as of April 16, 2018 and a member of the Board of Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Turkey as of May 15, 2018.
Mahmut Özgener speaks English and French and is married with two children.
