21.10.2011 / Ankara

The Speaker of the Parliament of Turkey Cemil Çiçek welcomed the NGO committee lead by TOBB President M. Rifat Hisarcıklıoğlu, comprised of Türk-İş President Kumlu, TESK President Bendevi Palandöken, TZOB President Şemsi Bayraktar, TİSK Deputy President Tandoğan Tokgöz, Turkey Bars Union President Vedat Ahsen Coşar, Kamu-Sen President İsmail Koncuk, Memur-Sen President Ahmet Gündoğdu, Turkey Notaries Union President Fahri Köse, TÜRMOB President Nail Sanlı, Turkish Veterinarians Union President Mehmet Alkan and Tursab Board President Başaran Ulusoy.

Speaking at the meeting, Hisarcıklıoğlu stated that their reason for visiting was "relaying their views on the recent terror attacks and the constitution".

Relating that they have started a new era on September 19th, Çiçek stated that he brings up the expectations and complaints of the NGOs regarding the constitution at every opportunity. Çiçek said that most of the problems faced today are stemming from the fact that the constitution fails to adapt to the conditions of the day.

Çiçek stated that there is consensus between political parties and among NGOs for a new constitution. Stating that there is no possibility that something as publicly claimed as this would not be discussed at the Assembly, Çiçek said that the process has been started as per expectations.

- "It should be discussed in 81 provinces"

Speaker of the Parliament Çiçek stated that if there is to be a new constitution, occupational organizations and nongovernmental organizations will also have a part to play.

"We will not be doing as the 4 parties. Complaints were to this end previously. If this is to be the constitution of the people then the people need to play a part. 95% of the public is represented in this parliament. The most important aspect of democracy is participatory democracy. Everyone needs to contribute to this process if this is to be the constitution of the people.

The occupational organizations which represent more than half the population are here, they need to contribute to the process. It's not enough that these discussions take place in Ankara and Istanbul. Every establishment has congresses and meetings. This matter should be discussed in 81 provinces."
