TOBB President M. Rifat Hisarcıklıoğlu hosted Turkey’s newly appointed Ambassador to Canada, Tuncay Babalı. During the meeting, Hisarcıklıoğlu stated that the Turkey-Canada trade stands at a point to the detriment of Turkey; that it must be balanced and increased.

Emphasizing that they have almost no contact with the Commerce Chamber of Canada, Hisarcıklıoğlu said, “We do not know each other. The business communities must be closer. Let us prepare the grounds for this.”

Requesting that the Ambassador Babalı works closely with DTİK members, TOBB President said that if the Ottova officials were to visit various provinces they would receive all necessary support via the Chambers in those provinces.

Speaking about the Turkey-Canada Business Council, a part of DEİK, stated that business councils are important for the development of trade.

The TOBB President said that as of the end of July 2012, direct Canadian investment in Turkey had reached 14 million dollars while Turkish companies’ investments in Canada only totaled up to 2.8 million USD.

The guest Ambassador Tuncay Babalı stated that they would strengthen relations with Canada by developing economic relations and increasing trade volume.

Stating that trade has increased with THY’s direct flights to Toronto, Babalı stated that with the visit of Foreign Affairs Minister Davutoğlu on the 20th of September, the first high level state visit in 16 years had been conducted.

Relating how there has been great improvements in bilateral relations in comparison to the past, Ambassador Babalı said, “As the leader of the business community, we await your visit as well. As the Turkish population, and therefore the number of entrepreneurs increases, so will our collaboration.”
